Taken at about 4:30 A.M. on October 16, 2008.
We woke up at 3:00 A.M. from a short night’s sleep at the Darjeeling Planter’s Club. The night before, we had gotten in around 10:00 P.M. and “enjoyed” the occasional serenade of howling dogs. Boarding special 4-wheel-drive vehicles and hiring drivers for the trek, we made our way along with the other tourists and pilgrims to see the inspiring sight. As the first golden rays of light hit the tip of the highest peak, a great cheering roar rose from the throng. As the deep oranges gave way to golden yellows and then to whites, the fog that enshrouded the foot hills and valleys was burned away, revealing the town of Darjeeling.

When I was in Chongtong tea estate in 1976 in Darjeeling, a similar view was there thru my sitting room big window, and it was so charming to see color changing from silver to pure white to gold – just like Darjeeling tea’s different flushes throughout the year. Memories came roaring back after reading your words.

A wonderful place. My computer’s wallpaper image is that of Kanchenjunga from my stay in Darjeeling a year ago. We arrived at the Planter’s Club in the evening with the entire area enshrouded in fog, not knowing what the area would look like. We awoke to a beautiful clear day with the magnificence of Kanchenjunga filling our vision. Thanks Dan. This really brings back wonderful memories.
Dan, I am laughing my butt off! I think I had that same view from the Planter’s Club …. two years later! What a hoot! I loved the town of Darjeeling …. just found you here in the archives and had to comment. Wonder where WE are going in 2012?
