Much as I agree with the co-founders of T Ching about putting sweeteners in tea (never), I must admit that now and again I like a cookie or a slice of cake with my afternoon cuppa. With that in mind, I have been on the search for a confection that complements – but does not overwhelm – the tea I am drinking.
To align with those criteria, the sweet must be subtle. Shortening based goo – also known as that white stuff between the layers of an Oreo cookie – is not welcome here. The texture needs to be snappy and crisp to hold up against those of you who like to dip your cookie into the tea.
Eureka! I’ve found it! Look no further than Kedem Tea Biscuits. I found them in the kosher section of the local supermarket.
Enjoy!

A nice, lightly sweetened scone works nicely as well. I think the Brits must have worked on that combo for quite some time. I also think that nuts work well with tea. That being said, a strong oolong or nice, flavorful black like Golden Lion’s Paw or Yunnan Black can withstand some of the more intense flavored desserts as well, if that is your desire.
For me, tea is a solo beverage. I drink 6-8 cups a day and don’t choose to pair it with any food. As a no calorie health beverage, I’m reluctant to get in the habit of eating or nibbling while I’m sipping. Of course when guests are present, it’s a whole other story. Bring out the goodies. While in China, I always enjoyed the nuts that often accompanied tea at tea houses – some were coated and quite delicious.
Can’t wait to try these! Although I often am just drinking tea by itself, I sometimes want a nibble alongside. If it’s a strong black tea with lots of tannins, a sweet will go very well; if it’s a delicate green tea, the less sweet the better. I see that these biscuits come in different flavors, so I will try a few. I’m intrigued by the idea of nuts with tea–I can’t imagine what that’s like, so I will have to try that too! What kind of nuts go best, Sandy and Michelle?
There are times when I like to nibble with my tea and times when I don’t. I agree a complimentary nibble is a must and I tend to go in the shortbread direction when the combination craving requires something sweet. With that said… these sound delicious!
